Kilosa.
Four passengers were killed as 38 others escaped with injuries after their bus overturned in Kilosa District yesterday.
Morogoro Regional Police Commander Leonard Paul said the bus was travelling to Dar es Salaam from Tabora when it veered off the road and overturned at 11.45am.
He added that preliminary investigations have established that the vehicle belonging to Airbus Transport Company  rolled when the driver lost control as he approached a bridge.
“The driver was speeding when the accident happened.  This is an accident that could have been avoided,” Mr Paul said.
However, some eyewitnesses said the driver lost control after the steering system failed.
“We heard the driver shout that the steering had failed and that anything could happen.  A few seconds later the bus flew off the road and overturned,” said a passenger who did not want to be named. Mr Paul said police were looking for the driver, who fled from the crash scene.
“We’re looking for him...we want him to answer a few questions,” he said.
Yesterday’s crash comes only three days after 36 people died and 50 were injured in an accident involving three vehicles in Butiama District.
Most of the casualties were in two buses belonging to Mwanza Coach and J4 Express, which collided after  one of the vehicles rammed a car.
Transport minister Harrison Mwakyembe announced the suspension of the companies that operated the buses pending investigations into the accident and vetting of drivers employed by the firms
